Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary offers four days of hands-on, awesome, age-appropriate activities to explore the natural world in winter. Sign up for the entire week or individual days. For ages 6-11 yrs. Participants will be divided into smaller groups by age.
The Barn and Nature Center is warm and cozy for indoor activities that include listening to stories, singing songs, playing with friends, and looking under a microscope.
Maple Sugaring: Tuesday, February 16 Today we値l learn about one of nature痴 tastiest treats--maple syrup. We値l discover how to distinguish a sugar maple from all the other trees in the forest and tap it to collect the sap. After a visit to the sugarhouse, we値l know how sap turns into syrup and try it on some of our very own pancakes. We値l see who can tell the difference between store-bought syrup and the real stuff!
Winter Homes: Wednesday, February 17 Can you imagine being outside through the entire winter? We値l explore the woodlands, wetlands, and field edges for nests, cavities, burrows, dens, and lodges to discover how birds, mammals, and insects find homes in this challenging season. We値l build an igloo or shelter and see how warm it can be inside.
Carnivores Dining Out: Thursday, February 18 Winter is a great time to look for predators and the evidence they leave behind. Today, we値l look at animal bones, fur, scat, tracks, and chews. Then we値l hike the sanctuary in search of hawks, foxes, fishers, river otters, and more. We値l investigate how these animals are able to hunt prey in the cold winter weather.
Frosty Feathers: Friday, February 19 Have you ever watched a woodpecker peck a tree in search of food? Today, we値l observe chickadees, goldfinches, and cardinals gobbling up seed at the sanctuary bird feeders as they store up fat for the cold nights. Then we値l take a walk through the Hemlock Forest in search of owls and owl pellets. Before the day ends, everyone will make their very own bird feeder to take home.

Spring celebrations begin early at the sanctuary with the age-old tradition of maple sugaring. The warm days of late winter awaken the flow of sap in the maples, causing buds to swell and resulting in sweet smells coming from the sugarhouse. Tours last about an hour.
Learn how to identify a sugar maple, observe tapping and sap collection methods, and watch the sap being boiled down in the sugarhouse, where everyone gets a sweet taste of the final product.
Afterwards, warm up in the barn by our woodstove, indulge in a hot dog cooked in maple sap, sample our delicious soup and desserts made by sanctuary volunteers, or browse through our gift shop. Syrup is available for sale (quantities may be limited). Rain or shine.
Advance registration required for all tours.

Topsfield Massachusetts is an area of rolling hills and meandering streams and has some of the highest land in Essex County. Topsfield has a rural nature and contains a typical New England town common.
The town is home to many acres of protected land and trails which includes Bradley Palmer State Park. It is an excellent choice for hiking and biking in the spring and summer and cross country skiing in the winter. Topsfield also has plenty of agricultural land and hosts the Topsfield Fair.
The Topsfield Fair is America窶冱 oldest agricultural fair established in 1818 and held every October during harvest time. The Fair is chock full of agricultural exhibits as well as homemade baked goods and farm animals. There is also a largest pumpkin contest-always the most popular exhibit. It also has plenty for the kids including great stuff to eat and also a midway loaded with amusement park rides and games and a parade. The Topsfield Fair is a fun time for everyone and well worth the price of admission. Plan to spend a day there next October-you will be glad you did.
